If you can find them, there’s a little box that fits behind the toilet and when there’s pressure on the seat, it sounds off, ‘I’m workin’ down here.’

Usually this causes a hesitation in nature.

This is dedicated to Suzy Bell, my best friend, Chipper’s younger sister. We grew up together on Hinman Ave. We went to school together until the beginning of 2nd grade. I moved to Glenview. He moved to a big house closer to Evanston Hospital. I think this was either 2nd or 3rd grade. 3rd grade was cool, cause we convinced the substitute teacher that something was going on in the closet that she needed to see about… then we shut and held the door on her. I think we let it loose and ran to our seats. She was glad enough to get out… nothing happened. Our gang. We were a mean business kind of group. Didn’t want to hurt you… just show you we had something to teach too.

Back to Chipper’s house: there is where we made our first invention: The toilet. It was made of a tall cardboard back with some 2 by 4 support, a rope and a bucket. We tied the rope to the handle of the bucket, just big enough for a small butt, and led the rope thru the box so it came out about where the flush handle was on ‘real big toilets’.

We convinced Suzy that she would be the first and we would leave the room if she would just try it out. We told her to just pull the rope when she was done.

It worked, she pulled and it dumped the bucket on the floor. She ran screaming to her mother, who consoled her I guess.

Here’s to you, Suzy… see we didn’t do this wrapping mean trick. Ours was science. But I left shortly later and that was all there was to joy of plumbing career.

Several years later, we built a rocket launch pad later on at our new old farmhouse in Glenview: a 3 stager with the mouse and parachute in the 3rd. But the 2nd stage blew up and we never found the 3rd or the mouse. Sorry mouse in space. Hopefully he hooked up with a little matter wave of quantumly entangled helium and rode on to the other side. Yee Ha.
