We Are All Fascists Now
Human Affairs
Presidents’ day, Lincoln and/or Washington might be concerned with what is going on today … or not. I dedicate this entry to that discussion on this day of modified celebration. We, in Ilinois used to celebrate Lincoln’s birthday and Washington’s about 10 days later. Now we have Presidents’ day and Martin Luther King’s birthday celebrated. That’s cool. In the south, I think they celebrated Washington’s, but never Lincoln’s. I don’t remember if they had a 2nd holiday in February. Anyone?
I was asked today what Fascism was by my son. I bumbled out some explanation off the top about Hitler and Mussolini and then realized Hitler was a National Socialist … or was he? Totalitarian was more like it … he won an election against the communist candidate … but actually that was a USSR ally perhaps. The USSR was considered totalitarian, rather than communist, although they had some ideas of both mixed in as long as it served the state. Today, Russia seems more fascist, where it boldly enters into the private world and worries about laws later … but it does so by surprise and fiat, not by institutional mandate.
Mussolini was more purely fascist as he attempted to use force to control the country and especially the industrial focus, perhaps as Russia today. It was a depression and then a wartime economy. Governments do use ‘emergency powers’ which one could argue are fascist.
But this link rambles on about other topics - and kind of puts it into perspective of today. Are we in ‘emergency’ control by the government … or is this the control that the government wants to have from now on? An interesting debate. A single word may not be adequate to describe it.
