I dedicate this to Dad’s Day, 2010, to my dad, E. R. Kimball, Jr. MD. He spent a lot of time during WWII, understanding disease as he and his Typhus Commission followed army troups throughout Europe and N. Africa. His synthetic experience was that of isolating the positive ‘fortify you strength’ of the art of breastfeeding as he witnessed the weakened condition of mothers and all but the suckling infants. He made this a major stance of his 42 years as a Pediatrician, Educator, and Humanitarian. He was convinced that this should be promoted and the doctors and disease profiteering doctors who advocated or pleaded ignorant to a woman’s responsibility to breastfeed should be exposed and breastfeeding maximized for all but those whose somehow had a defect that made breastfeeding impossible. He was a founding advisor to the LaLeche League in 1956, and founded the ‘milk bank’ at Evanston hospital which supplied donated breastmilk to infants with severe allergies or conditions which didn’t allow them to access their own mother’s. The milk was pasteurized and safe. It can be frozen at a low temperature and lasts for two years. The milk bank is not active now, and blame should squarely go to the drug companies, one of which Meade Johnson purposefully targeted misinformation on a video to new mothers to sabatoge the mother-infant relationship. To ask if the child had a bowel movement each day is to apply infant formula standards to breast milk. Breast milk is at least 50 percent more absorbable, more usable, so fewer bowel movements are evident. And they don’t stink as bad, either.
So dad, for all those kids in your 42 years that you touched, to make them healthier, with strength fortified, including their immune systems, thanks. You will be always remembered.
