You: Why Dave; why now?
Me: Well, I've two talented kids; the younger mentioned my stopping with the lectures. Then enthusiastically asked, 'Dad, can I help you set up a blog?' Moments later, Me: 'OK, that's a great idea, thinkin' they might just read it someday.

These might be very good for surviving the first couple of weeks after a nuclear blast (about 15 or more miles away. The glass would blow out of your concrete block house on the windward and leeward sides, so position it away from a direct frontal on the those windows (or any windows is best.) Put hooks in the ceiling there, put food and water in the structure, and several diapers. Ventilation is a problem, so be sure to have the best dust masks in case you have to open it up during the coolest part of the day or night. You might want to have a gun or knife ready to defend yourself, and in that light, be sure to face all the cocoons at 180 degrees of one another. Somebody can then watch your back, and the ones with the guns won’t have friendly fire issues.
These would do well in a hurricane, but especially well in the winter that comes after a blast, whether nuclear or volcanic.
I haven’t considered the materials, but fire resistant, aluminum with nylon encased fiberglass, where fiberglass is also between the aluminum and nylon or polyester material to insulate from a heat wave. A little lead shielding over reproductive areas isn’t a bad idea. Water in buckets outside could also be released at the contact point and slowly drip over the outside skin for cooling…. and dust cleaning. Here is a website (Canadian) for some interesting ideas: http://www.ki4u.com/survive/index.htm
Oh yea, a really good hanging support is good. Attaching a bed frame or two angle iron might do well … give it that ‘industrial functional’ look in case you don’t make it to a big disaster. And there’s also the little warning that could be strategic for those ‘evil doers’. I do not recommend putting two of these close to each other and then constructing a tubular slide between the two from an upper floor. I just don’t think it’s appropriate.
