You: Why Dave; why now?
Me: Well, I've two talented kids; the younger mentioned my stopping with the lectures. Then enthusiastically asked, 'Dad, can I help you set up a blog?' Moments later, Me: 'OK, that's a great idea, thinkin' they might just read it someday.

It looks as if the lower most vertabra with the hole in it is the weak link in my back. I remember that cool February when we, some out of town friends of my wife and I had to carry a waterlogged Sunfish sailboat along Deerfield Beach and it was that last push up to the top of the stationwagon when I heard and felt a pop…no weasel, but my cushion between vertabrae, a fluid filled ‘disc’. And then it was a week until the pain radiated down my leg (cyatica) … a prison of pain … and up to my brother in Jax for the Cat scan… yep…it was a ruptured disc…. A consult with Arnold Ziel, MD a great micro neuro surgeon convinced me that the two options, operate or ‘3 months on my belly like a reptile’ were equally constructive. He was perfecting a procedure to cure the problem by making a half inch incision and chipping away any calcification around the vertebra and then cutting a slice of fat nearby and wrapping a nerve bundle with it, especially thru the hole. Months later he did this operation to my sister-in-law, and she had 4 boys under 14 years old… and was up and about in 2 days….
Moral of story… as my back hurts less, but for the 3rd day… and looking into the drive north to my daughters graduation from MIT June 3…don’t let anybody operate unless YOU ARE SURE THAT THEY WILL SUCCEED. And a few aspirin and time can work wonders with pain. Oh, and don’t throw sheets of plywood 8 feet over your head and lift water filled boats over your head, etc….
Dancing and being the object throw into the air… has its risks if the landing is not perfect. Swimming is a wonderful thing… and a future with this activity is sure to keep you strong and in one flexible piece at peace for a long time….
