You: Why Dave; why now?
Me: Well, I've two talented kids; the younger mentioned my stopping with the lectures. Then enthusiastically asked, 'Dad, can I help you set up a blog?' Moments later, Me: 'OK, that's a great idea, thinkin' they might just read it someday.

History, Family, Human Affairs
I was looking through a few albums to get a glimpse of my mom who passed at 96 over 8 years ago. This is a shot of her at a spritely 84, dad and my E, just the summer before we, wife, E, and I, took the Fall trip to visit Eric and Veronique in Paris, discover the Alps of France and Switzerland… as well as those pillboxes of Fecamp, of Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant. Careful ladies, do resist the temptation to impose upon your wealthy friend, the borrowing of pricey jewelry. Back to the point….
What shows on my E’s face is a broad smile, knowing that she is loved by her ‘other’ grandma, who lives 300 miles away. My mom’s face, only the most excited yields a demure look, is there in fond appreciation, and dad is nodding in is always professional child expert way, muffling intones of ‘Freud is a Phraud’ because Ed, his sister and brother-in-law include some of the best psychiatric minds in the country (his sister was a physicist working on the Manhattan project, before psychiatry).
Well back to mom … you see E is the first Kimball girl in 42 years. My sister was born during the war, when my dad had been shipped overseas, and they escaped San Antonio to a friend, Laura Whitney at Whitney Beach, near Sarasota. A hurricane struck and my sister broke her arm and the uncertainty was masking any pleasures that one should experience in that paradise.
There is so much in that demure, to feel the joy, but not overjoy… to balance what is now without remembering too much of what this takes you back into those memories where comfort was almost hidden by the stress of uncertainty…. almost a numbing of sensation, or movement or progress for fear that another hammer will drop.
Mom was quick to be demure; quick to grasp for certainty and always able to cope with some disappointment. Her faith, her loyalty, her tenacity and hard work and sacrifice for her family will always be remembered by this young son, and never have I heard a disparaging word from E about either of her grandmas, as both were blessings.
