You: Why Dave; why now?
Me: Well, I've two talented kids; the younger mentioned my stopping with the lectures. Then enthusiastically asked, 'Dad, can I help you set up a blog?' Moments later, Me: 'OK, that's a great idea, thinkin' they might just read it someday.

This theorem is important in building as well. It also defines a right angle. I remember when I used a Wild T12 theodolite in laying out one of the first Super Publix grocery stores (over an acre), the owner had a survey done at the completion (before final payment) and the hypothenuses of the two right triangles of opposite corners of the store were within 1/4 inch of eachother, which they said was the best they had seen. That was because I did my job. At the beginning, I told all the subcontractors that my lines were the ones to follow. Well the block masons didn’t seem to get the message. The struck their own lines, and started building up the walls … and that went on all day. Only the next day, the block wall was toppled, and consoling them, saying yea, could have been some surrounding neighborhood kids, I reminded them that the block was not on MY line, so they would have to take it down anyway if they wanted to be paid … looks like those vandals did you a favor. Two lessons: Don’t let anyone do your job. Lying to protect the greater good is ok. … and trust a Swiss theodolite.
