Music, History
I just saw this on IFC channel; Neil with his wife taped in 2006 or 25 years after I was listening to this song from my single, having been abandoned by my girl who went to Africa, got amoebic dysentery, raped by an African, almost died and brought a brand new black mustang with red interior… freeked me out a little; too real atop my surreal:
My summer had been living with the abnormal psychology professor’s family on campus, working under a NIH grant at the Hartford Hospital for a world famous team of Psychophysicist & Neurosurgeon, and participating in autopsies of cancer patients’ brains, doing histology sections, assisting in 9 hour operations on rhesus monkeys and researching and developing non polarizable electrodes to be implanted around the eyes of the monkeys. Dr. Robert Correll was a major player in the world scene of exploratory science on the limbic system and his paper showing sequential learning disruptions was the rage… in Russia. The neurosurgeon, his colleague was the first to operate on the human MTL on a volunteer medical doctor with schizophrenia. Not so much good happened because he couldn’t find anything, and short term memory was blatto. Woopsee daisy… now let’s see what that does to monkeys. Oh yeah, and we had to be really careful not to be bitten by the monkeys because they carried a Herpes virus that was fatal …. later HIV was described as having similar symptoms …. so we wore gloves when handling them and didn’t handle them much …
So maybe I wasn’t so sympathetic, and when my landlord/host Dr. Higgins stated that the ‘mind doesn’t work like a taperecorder’, I asked him, ‘Well, how does a taperecorder work anyway?’ That shut him up….., but I ended up having to get his recommendation for further careers, after rejecting med school.
I did build a TeePee for his son from sticks and a sheet. And when a postcard came from my good friend, a Mainer, who was traveling the West astride Black Beauty, a 1963 Ford Falcon, with the backseat out and bed extending into the trunk, from Wyoming with a vulture picking on a dead cowboy. His son, his only son got ahold of the mail, and I had one one the earliest ‘Lion King’ philosophy moments I can remember -something about the cowboy chose a harsh land and when he did all he could do he wanted to give himself back to nature so the beauty and ruggedness would remain … wow - the son was sympathetic … whalla … me a camp counselor from age 14, and building fence ranching and pouring slabs for bunk houses since 12 in Izard County, well I had been there … now what … no big deal.
Not so much in the romance department … a kind of malaise hung over me. This song helped that … and I’m happy that Neil found it.
