Just to correct something. This is called ‘Chip board’, or ‘Oriented Strand Board’, aka OSB. It’s like a random, shorter fibered plywood with more pressure, more glue, so the out-gassing of the glue is more likely. It is NOT ‘Particle Board’, that is made of sawdust and glue… pressed together that outgasses and eventually falls apart as the wood particles absorb moisture. Idiot builders use it under kitchen counters, idiot furniture makers use it under laminates … it is very heavy, about twice the unit weight of OSB or plywood. It is basically crap, and should be outlawed.
Sawdust is good to make ‘methanol’, burn for heat, or compost and use it in a soil mix. It is a terrible building material. When it gets wet, it expands and like rust blowing out paint when exposed to the air and dew points, it blows out the counter tops, the furniture, and has no tensile strength and marginal compressive strength.
It is almost as bad as Drywall, made from gypsum and Calcium Sulfate, either a found material from dead shallow sea organisms (where the stinky nitrates have metabolized to leave the mostly sulfates) or from your friendly sewage factory …. where in China, they also got rid of some wood waste, aka cellulose, which then ‘wicks’ the moisture throughout the gypsum …. where anaerobic bacteria can live and dance within the structure of the disassociative Calcium and Sulfate … and sulfate has 4 oxygens where they happily breathe, breed and expel their young into the open room spaces where you breath and then choke on and absorb the bacterial mass, or assorted molds that cause cancer …. and SICK BUILDING SYNDROME. I even noticed in the NICU of Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, FL, around the AC outlets in the ceilings where black mold and dripping metal fins are part of the system as an NICU requires a certain and relatively high moisture level. Solutions to existing homes built after 1974 (that’s when Prez. Ford allowed drywall): encircle all outflowing AC ductwork with non-gypsum material, eliminate exterior walls of inside finishes that contain gypsum, especially around power outlets which allow the cold AC dry air into the wall interior to reach dew points with the outside hot damp air.
I dedicate this outrage to a good friend, who passed away after over a 7 year fight with breast cancer. Her home had drywall and she finally moved out because for years the neighbor’s sprinkler would hit her bedroom wall, facing west, so every afternoon the hot sun would heat the wet wall, and the vapor pressure within the porous cement block-stucco wall (CBS) would reach a dewpoint and deposit its drops on the inside of her wall, especially lower parts, and as the dutiful wife, she would clean up the mold… until she felt the lumps…. and had two healthy sons, who 20 years ago she breastfed - so she even had a better odds at not contracting breast cancer…. but she slept there, cleaned it and when she moved into another home …. also with drywall (YOU BETTER KEEP IT DRY), it was too late. But try to prove this …. it would cost million$.
So it’s really important to not accuse OSB as being Particle Board. To illustrate the point, if you made a boat of drywall, you wouldn’t get past the end of the dock, and people would mock you for the rest of your life; if you made it from Particle Board, you would make it to about 100 yards from the dock … and you could swim ashore, and you would have to clean it up and be mocked by some, but you might meet someone who really felt sorry for you and appreciate you for your body only…. If you made it from OSB, you could make it out to the great fishing grounds, have a good day of fishing, the boat would fall apart, sink and you would be a tasty meal to a passing shark, as well as your caught fish, unless you kept them in a floating locker, where some deserving sailor or desperate stink pot mate would haul it aboard, and use it, gleeful on his ocean bounty, thereby you would know your death was on the face of it sublimely altruistic.

Behold the fractal pattern of the particle board (AKA “MDF”) that mosts homes these days are made of.
