The Republican presidential nominee, an Arizona senator, was a maverick, which was part of his charm. He spoke and acted impulsively, which was part of his problem. -

George Will hast den Nagel auf dem Kopf getroffen.  But like any ‘foreign’ expression, it is not complete without a translation.

John McCain proved during the campaign that he suffers from ‘captivity appeasement syndrome’ or something like the Patty Hearst deal when she joined the outlaws, having been kidnapped and emotionally locked into their culture. McCain’s impulsivity was part of the problem as it seemed like inspirational … but the follow thru was missing. Remember when he came back to DC over some crisis … but then caved to the opposition.

Deep within him is a kind of survival mechanism….’Confront the enemy (that becomes your victory … and the enemy’s defeat), but then compromise… and that becomes the opposite.  They feed on eachother.  It makes the captor know that you are alive and important and since they win in the end, you are complimenting them, and flattery does win you ‘another day’ …. especially when you become accustomed to suffering.  So making us suffer along with McCain is something he feels is ever so reasonable.

But there becomes a ‘Game Theory’ trump card for each of McCain’s bravatos… and they are castrated, voters frustrated and the opposition enlarged, obscenely.

To that end, McCain’s time as a voice of opposition should be retired … and he too, in reflection will see the fairness in that.

I predict he shall lose his Senate seat to his Republican primary opponent.

George Will
