Whatever the meaning of the infant’s cry, the infant should not be allowed to cry for more than 5 minutes before some guardian figure ‘breaks the hysteria’ of long term crying. What’s worse than crying is unresponsive neglect. The first 3 years or so shape the personality of an individual; that’s why you can’t recall much from at least the first two, unless they are really traumatic .. if one is neglected, he or she can become a neglecter or can neglect danger signals and become a danger to her or his own survival. That’s to paraphrase my dad, E. R. Kimball, MD., in his book ‘Parents in Positive Control’.
