If not the greatest, one of the most amazing discoveries of the 20th Century was the proof that Bose-Einstein Condensates exist. To take nothing away from Ketterle and Wieman, without Wineland, the elusive BEC might not yet have be realized, proven, shown that magic exists in the world, superconductivitinously, etc. And it’s true, I studied physics in the late 1960’s and 1970’s and was not on the in crowd even considering discovering an object, that loses it’s identity and becomes a waveform, a spacetime energy, that can also laser itself away, either electron or proton, or neutron.
When I heard of BEC’s in July of 1995, in a Time mag. article proclaiming the the Holy Grail of Physics was at hand… and further articles led to the methods, of which ‘shining a laser on the atoms in an opposite direction to slow them down’ I thought yeah that’s a neat idea, like somebody just had a similar thought one day and wallah, BEC’s were stabilized.
A small prediction, the female scientist at Harvard, who has projected a signal laser through an elongated spheroid of BEC, slowed the laser to 29 mph thru the BEC, and upon emerging, it regained its 186k mi/sec or so, with the signal information intact. That is a real wow…, especially if it is scalable which may be discovered as we understand the immense cooling strength of vast spacial-temporal vortices, deep within the Event Horizon say of our central Black Holes of our own galaxy.
