The builder of the Empire State Building was Starrett Bros. & Eken, also the builders of the previous world’s tallest building, 40 Wall St. until that tricky builder of the Chrysler Building erected the monel spire at the final moments, overtaking the supremicy of the 40 Wall St. Structure, of which Henry V. Spurr was the Chief Engineer for the consulting engineering company, Purdy and Henderson, who also designed the structure and supervised the construction of 40 Wall Street, a record height, but also a record in time as the previous building was cleared and 40 Wall St. was built within one year (according to the NYT). During the construction, the Crash of the Stock Market occurred, thanks in part to the insider trading, short selling of Patrick Kennedy, later to become the 1st SEC chairman under FDR.
The Empire State Building didn’t need a consulting engineer designer, they had the notes, book and Civil Engineering Journal articles by Henry V. Spurr. The building was a financial boondoggle as it wasn’t fully rented until 1955, some 20 years after construction. Also the spire on the top was designed to attach to Blimps, and Spurr mocked this as a foolish waste, as winds would never allow it.
Winds were always part of Henry V. Spurr’s life. I’ll never forget sailing with him on his boat, owned by another and raced as of 2004, the Whisper. Happy New Year, Harry.
