You: Why Dave; why now?
Me: Well, I've a two talented kids; the younger said, 'Stop with the lectures.' Then asked, 'Dad, can I help you set up a blog?' Moments later, Me: 'OK, that's a great idea, thinkin' they might just read it someday.

A Few Re: On Life, Sustaining
Medicine, Science, History
Dedicated to my dad, Pete Wagner, Dr. Robert Correll, Dr. Peterson and always Uncle Harry.
Dad taught me that what we today called ‘Pasteurization’, is not at all what Dr. Pasteur had in mind. He took raw milk, heated it to 140 degrees, let it cool …. and repeated that another 2 times. Today we just keep it cheap; heat it to 160 degrees for about 10 minutes. The problem is that this higher temperature kills off the ‘good’ bacteria as well, and so your immune system, while it is not weakened, it is not strengthened.
Pete Wagner, my dad, and me all worked together to produce ‘raw’ milk. Pete and I squeezed the cow … Pete on his farm, me in ours …. we filtered it, trying to keep the tail out of the face and pail, through a tin funnel lined with a few layers of cheese cloth, into glass milk jugs, half gallons…. about 4 or five per day per cow. Bubbles was a Holstein. I don’t even remember getting a cold for that year that I struggled with this.
Dr. Peterson was a Vet and a PhD Bacterialogist at the Fayetteville campus. I lived in his laboratory for keeping his drip irrigated 40 acres operational. I also kept he and his wife company at dinner time… as their children had left, and she having had a broken leg as a young girl in Utah, gotten on a boxcar to the nearest town in winter to have it set … was never set right and suffered a very painful walking and just living experience, hence she had trained everyone to be extra kind and do all sorts of nice things for her…. except in her retirement, the pain was finally going away, she could walk, but now she was nasty because she still expected people to do things for her … and they really didn’t need to… well, poor Doc. Peterson wanted company once in a while at the dinner table…. since I had run a residential treatment center for everthing from autistic to schizophrenic and walking catatonic to talking crows, cows and horses, this was a breeze. To the rest o’ the story … well, Doc Peterson set up the high density poultry business for Tyson and was a consultant all over the world. His expertise was introducing antibiotics into the feed in microdoses such that the animals would not get sick, the food would stay fresh and everything was hunky dory…. while others put preservatives (mercury) in the food which poisoned the ‘bugs’. That’s been reported in Perdue chicken, with Tyson, no mercury. He also was convinced that cancer was caused by a bacteria, one that could withstand high temperatures. Perhaps some of the molds we find in moist drywall areas would qualify, but obviously those lower temperatures, with dewpoint moisture would even make the high temperature tolerant bacteria happier… like Hawaii, not Pheonix.
Dr. Robert Correll, head of Psychology at Hartford Hospital and a Psychophysics prof at U.Conn. was my boss for a year or so, as I did histology sections of human and monkey brains, assisted in 9 hr. operations installing electrodes or ablating MTL in monkeys. Was working on a research project designing and building non-polarizable electrodes to implant around eyes, when NIH grant was cut off… discouraged I kind of gave up on torturing animals to further some career. We did feed the animals both oranges, apples, bananas, and Purina Monkey Chow. They were very heathy and we used the best anesthesia around, even cirulated manitol in the brain, an alcohol which shrunk the brain in order to easily access the Medial Temporal Lobe (MTL) structures. It was very expensive research, as the monkeys were kept alive for years, as Correll designed ever more sophisticated psychological tests. So the take away was that the good food sustained all the hazards and maintained the health of the monkeys.
Uncle Harry’s famous line was ‘Don’t you feel it?’ — when we were sailing and how to achieve the maximum force from the combination of sail trim, boat pitch, and he added spar angle by adjusting the stays attached to the hull at top of the mast. His sail didn’t reach the top of the mast … he found it easier to sail under another boat’s wind (on the leeward side) … we did that to Sparkman on one of his own … and he would yell ‘Harry, you got a motor in that boat?’ Harry also adjusted the hull so below water it spread out and above water it cut, the water. The take away is there is no detail unimportant in good design.
So, on Sustainance, unlike Lou Holz on Hannity last night said, ‘Vegetarian in native american means lousy hunter,’ I’m going to go with quality, veggies, meat, whatever. I’d like to propose and if anyone finds besides the studies of Dr. Peterson (might be a good place to base a study) on how little antibiotic should be used when someone is sick. One hour before and two hours after rule is pivotal to all antibiotics I theorize. If an antibiotic upsets your stomach, reduce the dose… (REMEMBER, DRUG COMPANIES WANT TO SELL YOU DRUGS). Also if you use less and time it so you are killing just the bacteria in your body, not also those in your food, the food gets a chance to rekindle your immune system and keep that healthy … so it compares nicely with the original Pasteurization idea … raise the temp… lower 3 times….
Remember the main idea is to ‘Do No Harm’… Surgery is such a dangerous endeavor, that breaching this axiom is almost impossible in the pursuit of the greater disease. The new micro surgeries and laser knives, and perhaps even the laser lights and nano sciences that are ahead can target the small infection earlier and medicine can enhance the natural immune system that is fighting EVIL in your body daily …. unless you have arthritis … and your immune system has turned on you. Maybe there’s a therapy for microdose antibody or nervous control medicine to stop your body from overreaching and messing witch cha…. Happy Halloween … keep the Spirits Alive.
