Science, Psychophysics, History, Theology ‘Neurons that fire together, wire together.’ Head of FAU’s Complex Sciences Dept. Here’s something else: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6SYR-3VXFB57-20&_user=10&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&_docanchor=&view=c&_searchStrId=1069473530&_rerunOrigin=google&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=6883da9549ee52e1464879719e7cad87 And a favorite of mine; I saw ‘Psycho’ at age 10, when it just came out, in Oak Bluffs, on a gloomy afternoon; I couldn’t sleep without horrible dreams for weeks; I never have wanted to see the movie again. Hitchcock was a master at suspense; but not really violence. You knew the violence was predestined and so it peaked your couriosity, but when it happened you only saw the results, piercing screams, amplified by strident music, and blood washing down the drain. So your mind was continually searching for the ‘reality’, and so your awareness was again heightened….. more on this, thanks to Scripps: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/palmbeach/plasmid/entries/2008/02/26/longterm_memory.html#jump Now, the hippocampus is a spiral-like horn object, in some ways similar to the cochlea of the ear. You might think that this shape would pick up different wavelengths as the cochlea does and translate them into higher frequencies (not sure about the translation of sound into electrical signals and to where… but that might relate). The hippocampus might be more of an accelerator where it whips the incoming into enough of a voltage to push a memory trace or attach a memory trace protein together. That’s why if you are really excited about something … it’s easier to remember. So get exciting about something worthwhile…..Life.Physicists discover that the structure of a brain cell is the same as the entire universe.
One is only micrometers wide. The other is billions of light-years across. One shows neurons in a mouse brain. The other is a simulated image of the universe. Together they suggest the surprisingly similar patterns found in vastly different natural phenomena. (David Constantine)
