Out of the mouth of babes. You bet. Believe.
From the prophetic Psalms of David, here 8:2 from Thomson Bible ‘From the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise, on account of thine enemies (on account) of destroying and enemy and a revenger.’ And continuing - ‘…what is man that thou shouldst be mindful of him, or a son of man that thou shouldst visit him! Thou madest him a little lower than angels, with glory and honour thou hast crowned him, and set him over the works of they hands.’ 8:4-6
If you cannot imagine these babes as ‘a little lower than angels, with glory and honour’, then you might think you could dismiss the ancient Jewish prophecy texts and abandon Jesus’s claim that he came to ‘fulfill, not destroy.’ (Matt 5:17ff) Then you are no Christian and you become lost even as a Jew…so pick it up, man and walk that easy road, that road made easy and witnessed by the likes of these ‘babes and sucklings’
And I think this is another Martin Luther King moment to remind us of Jesus’s sacrifice, not MLK’s; but celebrate MLK’s dream that we like children who understand each day what parents do to keep their children safe, or what they should do, and quell the fears that children and we all have of doing enough to sustain our positive belief in our safety and mankind’s justice by putting the ‘Presumption of Innocence’ above all other beliefs.
It is children who so deeply cherish kindness, love, warmth, magic, fantasy, grace. How thankful should we all be that children as they are shown kindness truly rejoice in it. Carefully look at each of these children who have believed, not suspended disbelief, but feel in their hearts that of a loving power that we now understand has finally made the ultimate sacrifice of giving life and then taking it away in order that man and every man may see what Martin Luther King could dream that we could live in peace and understanding not of how difficult it was but how ‘easy’.
Even as so many of us and all at times perhaps have doubted how sacrificing a wonderful counselor, prince of peace, healer and self proclaimed son of the word made flesh, ’Lord of heaven and Earth’, can heal man’s every past and future sin, easily, if only we believe, and yet we stumble, isn’t it miraculous just to see these children rejoice in the belief that someone has given so much for their safety and wellbeing. Would you want to take that away? And would you want to take away innocence without proof of the contrary? Would you, like the learned of the time, abandon justice for the most bitter reality?
Then he (Jesus) began to upbraid the cities in which the most of his miracles had been done, because they had not reformed.’ Matthew 11:20 Thomson Bible
…Jesus took occasion to say, I thank thee, O father, Lord of heaven and earth; that thou having hid these things from the wise and prudent, has revealed them to babes.’ Matt11:25
So, ‘Take upon you my yoke and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’ Matt 11:29
(this post was inspired in part by Tebow; I watched the Patriot - Broncos game, biggest in 18 years of viewship. My first game of the season. It was as Tebow said, ‘only a game’. He understands sacrifice, and he remains exhalted in many minds. Bravo.
