Free Stanford Lectures on Einstein's General Theory of Relativity
BEC, Physics, ScienceThis is quite a long series, but put it on in the background while you browse the internet instead of music and you’ll be a physicist in no time.This is excellent. There are also a bunch of other courses up on Stanford’s YouTube page (look at all the playlists), including special relativity and cosmology.
Leonard Susskind is the Stanford U. professor who recently caused (if you believe in cause and effect) Stephen Hawking to retract his assertion that ‘bits of universe were disappearing’ in black holes; ‘information is lost’. It’s as if black holes, and these could be microblack holes could zap away stuff, and that the universe would continue… The Science Channel on June 21st, 2009 had presented this dispute of Susskind vs. Hawking. The Bearded Bald Guy vs. the Hunched-Over Incoherent Amazing Survivor. And it was the power of the universe, the mind itself of the all-mightie (no limerick here) where was it the universe could become senile, have alzheimers, and continue on?
No said Susskind … Yes said Hawking…. then No said Hawking, but differently than Susskind said. Well Susskind thinks that the information from a 3 dimensional space changes into a 2 dimensional space-time extension as it enters the black hole on the surface of the interior lining of the event horizon… or at least that’s my take. Nobodies been there. But at least if the stuff is removed from what we know as the universe, it is removed in a manner that it ‘could’ be retrieved ‘with some pretty neat tools’.
Now Black holes according to others from this and another show ‘Super Black Holes’ on this same evening are at the hub of our galaxy …. Milky Way …. and weigh in at 4,000,000 sun masses. They control the movement of the spiraling spin of the stars around the galaxy as a linear correlation has been measured on ours and other galaxies. Some other galaxies have Black Hole Hubs weighing 30 Billion of our Sun masses. And something else to think about: 1/2 percent of the mass of the galaxy is the central Black Hole mass.
Oh yeah, and another tid bit; Black Holes came first…. kind of … from stars imploding and then sucking up dust …. then dust higher velocities clung together to make more stars…. and moved faster as the central Black Hole got going faster …. until more and more Stars formed farther and farther away…..
We are about 2/3 of the way out from the center… not so much risk of the black hole grabbing us… but always that possibility of some distant time … another galaxy or black hole will venture too close to our galaxy …. and then it really gets dicy…. (Here’s thinking of OxyClean and Billy May) By then we just might be able to put ourselves into a long little 2D ribbon in a heatproof, shockproof, bouncie thing…. and go for a ride, just hoping to have an autopilot that will avoid the Black Hole Event Horizons that may be formed from the incredible energy….
Dark Energy vs. Dark matter…. Susskind’s onto this (see related videos) …. oh yeah…. ‘Do not go gentle into that good night, rage, rage, against the dying of the light’ my best to Dylan Thomas, and to my aunt Ruth, passing Saturday… as I hope she will meet her son who died tragically, green diving, aged 17, 43 years ago, a physics wiz, my friend… that he’s on that ribbon raging against the dying of the light.
